Dr. Shiv G. Kapoor is director of the College of Engineering Manufacturing Education Program and of the Center for Machine Tool Systems Research. He is best known for contributions to the development of mechanistic process models for machining processes. For the past several years, Professor Kapoor has focused on micro/meso-scale manufacturing, with particular emphasis upon the fundamental mechanics of machining at the micro/meso-scale and on the miniaturization of machine tools. Using microelectronic and micro-optic technologies, his research group has designed and built fully functional three- and five-axis microscale milling/drilling machines, achieving a significant step toward the overall goal of a desktop factory capable of manufacturing biomedical implants, miniature defense systems and microelectronics parts. He and his co-researchers have a patent pending on the three-axis microscale machine tool.
