I will argue against the viscoelastic paradigm, where non-equilibrium response is modeled by memory functionals, and in favor of the elastoplastic paradigm, whose basic tenet is an enlarged set of state variables (and, correspondingly, of evolution equations). The former paradigm has been dominant in the mathematical theory of materials since the appearance of the foundational papers by Noll [1,2] and Coleman & Noll [3] until recently, when the latter has been gaining prominence, as testified by the textbook by Gurtin, Fried & Anand [4].
