Concentration Areas

  • The Concentration Areas define wide knowledge domains which refer to the regular teaching activities, research, technological development and service provision, in an integrated way, at the Program and the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Research Lines

  • The Research Lines define the thematic domains in which there are decisions and institucional predisposal towards the realization of technical-scientific research activities and technological development.

  • Each Research Line can be associated with one of the Concentration Areas of integrated operation involving DEM and PEM.

Projects

  • The Projects are defined and coordinated by faculty members.

  • Each Project can be associated with one Research Line.

  • The Project Team is constituted specifically for its realization.

  • Great diversity of Research Lines and Projects available for the participation of Mechanical Engineering students.

  • Research Projects: they are related to more fundamental themes.

  • Development Projects: they are related to technological application.

  • Usually,  these Projects are funded by public agencies of fomentation of research and technological development.

  • Frequently, Projects are held alongside companies, public institutions and non academic entities, funded by them.

Intelectual Production

  • The Intellectual Production refers to all forms of registration and promotion of the Research activities results.

  • In Mechanical Engineering, Intellectual Production comprises the Bibliographical Production, the Technical Production and, eventually, the Artistic Production.

  • The Bibliographical Production comprises all sorts of publications.

  • The Technical Production comprises activity reports; organization of technical-scientific events; methods, techniques and processes development; patent registration and other activities related to or resulting from the Projects.

Research Ethics

  • Discussions at UFRJ regarding ethical matters when it comes to research, which involve themes such as research integrity, human or animal participation in researches, genetic patrimony, biosafety and relations between company and university are the Research Ethics Technical Chamber’s (CTEP/UFRJ) jurisdiction.

  • See:Graduate studies Pro-Rectory’s memo and Informative material.

News (feeds)

  • This is a concise and direct form of fast access to news and communication from public agencies that fund graduate programs and scientific and technological development research that more significantly support and fund the research activities in Mechanical Engineering.

Objective

  • The Mechanical Engineering Program - PEM-COPPE/UFRJ aims to form Masters and Doctors in Mechanical Engineering with advanced technical-scientific knowledge, who are capable of acting in teaching and research activities, specialized in applying  advanced techniques and methods to the practice of Mechanical Engineering.

  • The possibilities of graduate studies are broad and diverse in order to attend the demands of a labor market more and more segmented, in a high level technological environment, constantly evolving.

  • The classes and the Master’s Dissertations and Doctoral Thesis offer opportunities of further development of the principles and theoretical and methodological fundamentals and appliance of advanced techniques of Mechanical Engineering.

  • The Master and Doctoral programs are structured to be concluded, by students with full dedication, in two and fours years, respectively.

Historical Aspects

  • Founded in 1965, PEM is the second graduate program created at COPPE/UFRJ, and is one of the first programs in the country in its field.

  • PEM-COPPE/UFRJ has contributed to the education of several people that have become faculty and researchers, instituting many Mechanical Engineering graduate programs across the country.

  • Since its creation, the Program offers its students a graduate educational formation highly aimed at the mastery of phenomenon fundamentals, processes and technological systems regarding Mechanical Engineering. The classes contents and themes and methodology chosen at our Master’s Dissertations and Doctoral Thesis reflect these tendencies.

Tendencies

  • Nowadays, the programmatic and thematic interests of the activities lead masters and doctors under the program towards:

    • teaching and research activities in higher education institutions;

    • research departments of companies of high technology - for example, oil and energy companies;

    • acting in companies with projects and consultancy.

Appraisal

  • Since 2001, the Graduate Studies Program of Mechanical Engineering of COPPE/UFRJ has obtained the highest grade in the CAPES Evaluation of Graduate Studies Programs of the Ministry of Education. In a scale of 1 to 7, the following concepts were obtained by PEM-COPPE/UFRJ:

      • 2017 evaluation, quadrennium    2013-2016:   concept 7
      • 2013 evaluation, triennium         2010-2012:   concept 7
      • 2010 evaluation, triennium         2007-2009:   concept 7
      • 2007 evaluation, triennium         2004-2006:   concept 7
      • 2004 evaluation, triennium         2001-2003:   concept 6
      • 2001 evaluation, triennium         1998-2000:   concept 6
